  • Andover finished a perfect conference soccer season with a 2-0 win over Goddard Eisenhower Thursday night.
The win improved the Lady Trojans record to 10-4-1 and 5-0 in Division 2 of the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Conference.
“We’re very happy to be in this position,” said first year coach Chris Lemons. “To be undefeated in conference is great. I’m really proud of them.”
Lemons said he wasn’t ready to skip ahead to the post-season yet, though. Andover has a big game with Salina South Monday night that will play a big part in seeding for the playoffs.
Andover took care of the Lady Tigers the way they have many of their opponents Thursday night. They used their disruptive defense and relied on the speed of Laura Sellew and ball handling skills of Ana Dilkes to get chances on the offensive end.
Dilkes had enough near misses Thursday to frustrate most sophomores – including having a penalty kick blocked and having a several well-placed shots rattle the frame without going in the goal.
But Dilkes was still working just as hard with two minutes left to go as she had the entire match.
The first goal for the Lady Trojans came after Dilkes was surrounded in front of the goal and three Eisenhower defenders got the ball away from Dilkes and left her on the ground.
When the ball came out from in front of the goal, Dion Hallmark was their to gather it and hit a great shot from about 20 yards out into the top right corner to give Andover the lead.
The score was still 1-0 at the half due to several great chances from set pieces and free kicks just missing. Eisenhower had few chances in the first half and AHS keeper Victoria Haas handled all of them easily.
In the second half, Andover’s only goal came at the 30:42 mark when Dilkes took a pass from JoLynn Hallmark and headed to her right across the face of the goal. She got her right foot to the ball and beat the keeper to the corner of the goal.
Goddard Ike threatened a few times after AHS pulled back the attack to protect the lead. But the Lady Trojans just don’t give up many easy shot attempts and Haas takes care of several of the more dangerous shots on goal.
“We will celebrate this a little bit,” Lemons said of the conference championship. “But we will be back to work Sunday getting ready for Monday’s game and trying to keep the momentum going.”
