Cottonwood Elementary School and Robert M. Martin Elementary School recently participated in Life Skills Bread Baking Program. Paula Gray, a representative from King Arthur Flour in Vermont, came to both buildings to demonstrate how to bake bread to the 4th and 5th grade classes. The students watched as she and two student assistants from each building helped her mix, knead and shape the bread dough. Each child then received a small bag of white and wheat flour, an empty sack, a package of yeast, a dough scraper and a recipe booklet and were sent home with the challenge to make bread at home with their parents. Students were to keep one loaf to share with their family and bring one loaf back to be donated.
Cottonwood students baked 129 loaves of bread to share with the Wichita Children’s Home, Union Rescue Mission and Guadalupe Clinic in Wichita. Robert M. Martin students baked 109 loaves of bread to share with the Guadalupe Clinic in Wichita, as well.
