  • Logan Hiser and Mulvane's Conner Dempsey pitched brilliantly in a classic of a pitcher's duel in Game 1 of the Orioles' home baseball doubleheader Thursday.
Despite an efficient day for Hiser, the Wildcats made the plays at the end of the game that lifted them to a 3-2 win. Mulvane scored five runs in the second inning of Game 2 on way to a 7-2 win to complete the sweep.
Joe Cannady got the Orioles' first hit of the game in the fourth inning. He got to second on an error to set up Chase Winter, who hit an RBI single for the game's first run.
Hiser gave up just two hits and one walk through the first six innings as he stymied the Wildcats' lineup. He threw four strikeouts in that stretch and kept them off balanced.
But in the seventh, Mulvane managed a single and a double with a steal in between to manage a 1-1 tie.
Neither team scored in the eight inning, though the Orioles had a chance. Dalton Wheat led off with a double and got to third on a bunt single. But after Cannady hit a shallow pop up to right field, Mulvane was able to throw out Wheat at the plate to keep the game-winning run off the board.
Mulvane hit a blooper to shallow right field to score two runs in the ninth inning and take a 3-1 lead.
The Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning before Dempsey had to come out of the game. Wheat hit an RBI single to pull Augusta within a run, but the Orioles hit two straight groundouts as their rally fell short.
The losses spoiled senior night for the Orioles, who will close the season with road doubleheaders at Winfield, Rose Hill and Clearwater.
