The Genesis Foundation for Fitness & Tennis recently awarded The Arc of Butler County a check for $1,370 to assist its adaptive tennis team with program operation.
“Arc” tennis is the only tennis team in Butler County for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program has been in Butler County for many years and has a rich history in supporting these individuals and showcasing their talents.
Like mainstream tennis, Arc Tennis gives athletes the opportunity to learn and perform a variety of skills that can be used throughout their lifetime. Coaches focus on athlete’s current skill, and work toward gaining new skills with a greater level of ability. Benefits to athletes are not limited to just learning the sport of Tennis, but focus on team building and personal growth and development as well.
To participate, athletes must have an intellectual or developmental disability and be 8 years of age or older. The season runs from May to September with practices in El Dorado and Andover one evening per week. Athletes have the opportunity to participate in five or six tournaments around the state over the summer and finish out the season with a state tournament held in Wichita the end of September.

Without assistance from organizations like the Genesis Foundation these programs would not be possible. For more information on the Genesis Foundation visit www.genesisfoundationwichita.com.
