Bill Duggan, director of communications/information technology for the City of Andover, was the winner of the annual chili cookoff at Hometown Christmas in Central Park earlier this month.
Duggan finished second last year, which was his first time in the competition. He describes his “Doctor’s Orders” chili as “a sweet southwest style with a hidden heat.”
Sheryl Beard finished second in the completion with her “White Bean Chicken Chili.” Finishing third was Mark Gale with “Home on the Range.”
Other entries included “Stanley’s Smoking Chili” (Stanley and Sandy Palmer), “Go-Green Chili “ (Marta Wishard of H&R Block), Bellaroony,” (Isabel Johnson), “Anna Jane’s Jailhouse Chili” (anonymous), “Just Chili” (anonymous), “Emprise Bank” (Sheryl Harris) and “Hellbomb” (Cory Riffel).
Susan Renner of the Hometown Christmas committee said 200 chili tasting kits were sold – about twice as many as last year – and all the participants ran out of chili. She hopes for more participants next year.
The proceeds for Hometown Christmas go to “Caring and Sharing” of Andover, which helps needy families in the area.
A wrap-up meeting for the Hometown Christmas committee will be held Wednesday. Next year’s Hometown Christmas will be Dec. 13, 2012.
