El Dorado World War II veteran Junior McGoyne will be among four veterans from the area going on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., next week.


El Dorado World War II veteran Junior McGoyne will be among four veterans from the area going on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., next week.

He will join Ted White of Cottonwood Falls, Carl Funk of Liberty and Lee Gipson of Valley Center. Also, going on the flight will be El Dorado resident Kevin Pickrell.

The Honor Flight is a continuous effort to give free travel to veterans who fought in "the war to end all wars" to see the memorial built in their honor, the WWII memorial in Washington, D.C. The flight will depart Wichita Mid Continent Airport Sept. 28.

The Kansas Veterans and Family Reunion and the Celebration of Freedom are showing their support for the Central Plains Honor Flight by hosting a reception for the four area veterans on this flight.

A meet and greet will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the World War II History Center, 119 W. Central.

Then at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday they will gather for breakfast at Double Ds, 2529 W. Central, before departing for the airport at 5 a.m. for a 6 a.m. check-in.

They will return Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. and a reception for the veterans will be held at the airport at 7 p.m.

Sponsors for the event include the WWII History Center; Double Ds; Joe's Party Bus, which will be providing transportation to and from the airport; Celebration of Freedom; and the Kansas Veterans and Family Reunion.
