Two of the top three ranked teams in the preseason National Junior College Athletic Association poll met up for a scrimmage Saturday morning at Galen Blackmore Stadium as the top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Butler Grizzlies and the third-ranked Ellsworth (Iowa)?Panthers did battle for almost three hours on the football field as they prepared for their season opening games later this week.
The Grizzlies will go to Texas to try to avenge their only loss from last year against the fifth-ranked Blinn Buccaneers, while the Panthers open up at home against No. 8 Georgia Military.
“I thought it was a great scrimmage for both teams,”?said Butler coach Troy Morrell. “I thought we did a lot of good things at times, but not so good things at others.
“That’s why you do this. We’re definitely going to take the film and look through it and will be able to coach some things off of it.”
Morrell said things are going as planned for the Grizzlies as they prepare for the season opener.
“It just depended on what offense and what defense was in the game,”?Morrell said. “I thought our first group defense did a really good job,  and our first group offensively did well at times. They didn’t get a lot of reps in the deal, but I think they’re both in the positions that we’d like to have them in right now.”
The two teams played one half of a game with Butler scoring two touchdowns — on a 20-yard pass and another as the result of a blocked punt.
After the teams rested for halftime, both teams worked on their kickoff squads, as well as their two-minute offense and defense drills. Both teams scored one offensive touchdown on the drills.
After the game, many of the players congratulated each other for their play and were talking about wanting to see each other again for the national championship in December.
