The Butler Community College women’s cross country team won the Region VI Championships on Monday at Colby, giving the Grizzly women their eighth consecutive Region VI title. The Grizzlies finished first with 32 points, beating out Johnson County (50) for this year’s title.


 

 


The Butler Community College women’s cross country team won the Region VI Championships on Monday at Colby, giving the Grizzly women their eighth consecutive Region VI title. The Grizzlies finished first with 32 points, beating out Johnson County (50) for this year’s title.

Butler was led by Leah Thompson, who won the individual championship with a time of 18:26.80. Teammate Patrober Murindat was the runner-up, right behind Thompson at 18:31.11. Also placing in the top 10 were Jylian Jaloma (seventh, 19:25.46) and Jennifer Butler (10th, 19:42.85). Sydnee Cole finished 12th (19:56.04), Crystal Stegman placed 14th (20:09.96) and Holly Poe was 20th (20:49.20).

The Grizzly men’s team placed third at the Region VI Meet with 72 points. Butler placed behind Garden City and Cowley, who each had 45 points. Garden City had the faster sixth-best time to win the tie-breaker over Cowley.

Butler’s Joel Rop finished second individually with a time of 24:22.52. Jackson Toroitich finished fourth in 25:15.06, but the next Grizzly runner was nearly two minutes behind, as Eddie Banda finished 20th with a time of 27:09.12. Deon Russell finished 21st (27:14.11), Anselmo Borunda placed 25th (27:31.91), Kipp Schuler was 27th (27:39.57) and Andrew Falcon finished 36th (28:19.71).

Next up for the Butler cross country teams will be the NJCAA National Championships, which will take place Nov. 8 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
