The Butler Community College Board of Trustees met Oct. 7 to discuss approval of landscaping bids for the Welcome Center Infrastructure.

PKHLS Architects and MKEC Engineering have received bids for the landscaping of the east parking lot.

The base bids included Seeders, Inc. at $133,500; Tree Top nursery and Landscaping, $154,533; Tree-Rific at $139,000; Lawnworks; Lawn Sprinkler services; Hudson Gardens Nursery; and SSI Sprinklers.

The budget for this project is $90,000 and the lowest offer was presented by Seeders, Inc.

Marvin Dodson, Butler Facilities Management, recommended the college negotiate with
Seeders,  Inc. to arrive at a landscaping price that would be within budget.

A little over $5,000 in deductions were found after inspection of the parking lot infrastructure project.

Dodson suggested the board consider using the excess funds for the landscaping budget.

The recommended action was to approve the Seeders, Inc. bid and proceed with the landscaping for the center infrastructure project at a cost of $95,000.

The project crew saw the opportunity to lessen the cost of the initial $133,500 by changing plant sizes from three gallon containers to one gallon.

Soil amendments were figured in the initial bid also, but unnecessary.

The smaller sized plants will just take a little longer to fill out once in place.
The city has used Seeders, Inc. with prior projects.

The college anticipates to stay with in budget and Seeders, Inc. are offering a secondary bid of $96,100, which includes the reduction in plant size and omission of soil amendment.

The trustees approved the agreement with Seeders, Inc.
