Senior Logan Montes’ second goal midway in the second half proved to be the difference Monday for the Augusta Orioles in a 3-2 victory over the Circle Thunderbirds in a regional play-in game at AHS Soccer Complex.

Montes took a pass fron Ryan Albright that went through the penalty box and used a sliding kick in front of the goal mouth to score the game-winner in the 60th minute.

“I was just surprised the ball just went through (the box),” Montes said.

The Orioles (3-14)?had given up two goals in the second half to allow the T-Birds (1-16) back into the game; but the Augusta defense stiffened up after the final goal of the contest.

“We may have been more disappointed because it shouldn’t have happened,”?said senior Cody Turnquist. “It was mistakes we had corrected a long time ago. We just wanted to go out and give it our all. We didn’t want to give up.”

The Orioles had plenty of chances to score in the first half; but weren’t able to until Montes’ first goal in the 32nd minute. Montes took a pass from Zeno Matt and scored from 15 yards away to give Augusta a 1-0 lead.

Turnquist made the score 2-0 in the 37th minute when he stole a pass and was able to curl his 20-yard bending shot into the goal.

Ben Harstine scored both goals for Circle, including the equalizer on a penalty kick after being pulled down in the box by an Augusta defender.

The Orioles return to action at 7 p.m. tonight in a regional first round contest at Rose Hill.
