El Dorado artist Jim Clements will be among those with artwork in a show at the Southwind Gallery in Topeka, which is opening Friday.

“Can’t Show That in Topeka!,” along with “Driven to Abstraction,” will be on display through Sept. 26.

Artists’ receptions will be held for each from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 3074 SW 29th, Topeka.

Showing in the Loft is “Can’t Show That In Topeka!” featuring paintings, drawings and etchings of the human form in both realistic and abstract styles. Both exhibits feature the work of some the state’s most celebrated artists as well as many up-and-coming artists.

SouthWind Gallery owner Gary Blitsch said plans had been underway for some time for the figurative show.

“We had a (figurative) show last year that was a big success and wanted to do another one,” Blitsch said. “We also wanted to have a little fun with the title of the show since human anatomy is the inspiration for the work, and that’s when we came up with the idea for the Can’t Show That In Topeka title.”

Clements has three pieces in the show.

“The human body is God’s handiwork at His best,”?Clements said. “It is also one of the most difficult subjects to paint accurately. I really appreciate the gallery’s invitation to participate in this show.”

Gallery hours are: from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
